What are playable ads?
Playable ads are interactive ad units that let the shopper actually use or experience the advertised product for a short period inside the ad slot, rather than watching a passive video or clicking a static image. The format originated in mobile game user acquisition (a shortened, sandboxed slice of the game inside the ad) and has since extended into retail, product visualization, and 3D commerce as browser and mobile runtimes have gotten strong enough to render meaningful 3D experiences inside standard ad containers.
The format matters because the interaction itself is the signal. A viewer who plays with a product for a few seconds inside the ad has demonstrated more intent than one who watches a linear video to completion. Ad platforms report that playable ads can meaningfully outperform static or video creative on downstream conversion for game installs, and the same pattern has begun to show up in non-gaming categories where the product benefits from being handled (footwear, watches, consumer electronics, apparel, home goods).
Playable ads sit inside the broader 3D creative category, alongside streamable 3D ads, rotatable 3D display, shoppable 3D and shoppable AR, and AR ad units. The distinguishing property is the scripted interactive experience: playable creative gives the shopper agency over the ad itself, not just the click-through decision.
How playable ads work
A playable ad packages a small interactive experience inside a standard ad container, delivered through the same ad-tech pipes as any other rich media.
- Container packaging. The ad ships as an HTML5 or MRAID container carrying a runtime (a WebGL or WebGPU renderer, or a native SDK for in-app placements), scripted interaction logic, and asset payloads (models, textures, sound).
- Initial load and rendering. The runtime instantiates within the ad slot and begins rendering as soon as the impression is measurable. Progressive asset delivery (see streamable 3D ads) lets the ad start with a lightweight version and refine while the shopper is already engaged.
- Scripted interaction. The shopper interacts with the product through a defined script: swap colorways, open a door, trigger a feature, configure a variant, place the product in their room via AR, take a driver-seat view. The script is usually short (a few seconds to under a minute) and returns the shopper to a natural call-to-action.
- Event capture. Every interaction fires a tracked event. Playable ads typically capture dozens of engagement signals per impression, which flow back through the ad-network measurement stack.
- Call to action. After the interaction, the shopper is presented with a natural next step (install, buy, learn more, add to cart, launch AR). Conversion rates on these CTAs tend to be higher than on non-playable formats because the shopper is already engaged.
Categories of playable ads
- Game install playables. The original format: a sandboxed slice of gameplay for mobile game user acquisition. Still the largest playable ad category by spend.
- Product configuration playables. Interactive product customization inside the ad (color, size, feature swap) for footwear, apparel, watches, consumer electronics.
- Product demo playables. Scripted demonstrations of product features that the shopper triggers (open a door, run an appliance, extend a piece of furniture).
- Shoppable playables. Playable interactions that add commerce actions to the interaction script (add-to-cart from inside the ad, launch AR view in the shopper's room).
- AR playables. Camera-based playables served through Snap Lenses, Spark AR, TikTok Effects, or WebXR-capable browsers. The product appears in the shopper's world during the interaction.
Playable ads compared to related formats
| Format | Interaction level | Typical duration |
|---|
| Static image ad | Click only | 1-3 seconds view |
| Video ad | Watch only (plus click) | 6-30 seconds |
| Rotatable 3D display ad | Rotate, tap | 5-15 seconds engagement |
| Playable ad | Scripted interactive experience | 10-60 seconds engagement |
| AR ad unit | Camera-based placement + interaction | Variable, often longer |
Considerations for authoring playable ads
Playable ad production has some specific constraints beyond general 3D creative.
- Runtime budget. The runtime must fit inside the ad container's memory and CPU/GPU limits. This constrains asset complexity, script complexity, and physics if used.
- Load weight. IAB polite-load and initial-load rules still apply. Playables typically rely on streamable delivery patterns (see streamable 3D ads) to fit inside the budget.
- Interaction scripting. Unlike a linear video, the script must be resilient to user paths that don't reach the intended end state. Fallback conditions and clear CTAs are important.
- Measurement design. Playables produce a lot of events. The measurement layer should pre-select which events matter for the campaign objective rather than reporting all of them.
