What are AR ad units?
AR ad units are interactive advertising formats that use augmented reality to place virtual content into a viewer's environment or onto their face and body through a device camera. Rather than showing a static image or video, an AR ad unit invites viewers to engage with a 3D scene, try on a product, or place an object into their real surroundings in real time.
AR ad units run on the same rendering, tracking, and streaming stack as broader immersive experiences, but package that stack into an ad-serving container so it can be measured, targeted, and priced within existing mobile and web advertising systems.
How AR ad units work
An AR ad unit combines a small delivery shell, a real-time 3D runtime, and integration hooks into the host ad platform. The stages below describe a typical AR ad unit lifecycle on mobile.
- Impression served. The ad platform requests an AR ad unit and hands it to the host app, browser, or camera platform through its standard creative container (for example, MRAID on in-app inventory or a web ad container).
- Capability check. The unit detects whether the device supports the required AR runtime (ARKit, ARCore, WebXR, or a platform-specific camera SDK) and falls back to a 3D or video experience when it does not.
- Asset load. Geometry, textures, and any animation clips stream in, often in a compressed format such as glTF with Draco and KTX2 compression, so first render happens within the ad's time budget.
- Tracking and rendering. The runtime tracks the device pose or facial features, composites the virtual asset with the camera feed, and renders each frame at interactive rates.
- Interaction and measurement. Tap, swipe, dwell, and share events are sent to the ad platform, along with viewability and completion signals, to close the measurement loop with the advertiser.
Common AR ad unit formats
AR ad units come in several shapes, each suited to different products and inventory types.
- Face effect ads. Use the front-facing camera to place makeup, eyewear, or expressive filters on the viewer. Common in beauty, fashion, and entertainment campaigns.
- World AR ads. Use the rear camera and surface detection to place furniture, footwear, vehicles, or props into the viewer's physical space at true scale.
- Portal experiences. Open a doorway into a virtual scene the viewer can look around in, useful for travel, entertainment, and location-based storytelling.
- Interactive 3D previews. Present a rotatable 3D model of a product without full AR tracking, used as a lightweight fallback or in contexts where camera access is unavailable.
- AR playable ads. Combine an AR scene with a short interactive game or configurator, driving longer engagement and richer signals.
Where AR ad units run
AR ad units are delivered across several inventory types, each with its own creative constraints.
- Social camera platforms. Snap AR, Meta Spark, and TikTok Effect House host face and world AR ads that run inside the platform's own camera and share tools.
- In-app mobile inventory. AR creatives run inside MRAID containers on ad networks and SSPs, using the mobile WebView and a WebXR or JavaScript-driven 3D runtime.
- Mobile and desktop web. Programmatic ad slots on publisher sites can host AR units through WebXR and web AR SDKs, with a 3D or video fallback for unsupported devices.
- Owned surfaces. Brand product pages, campaign microsites, and QR-launched experiences run the same AR ad content outside a paid media buy, extending reach.
AR ad units and 3D streaming
AR ad units share their assets with other 3D and immersive experiences, so the same product model can appear in a face filter, a world AR ad, a shoppable product page, and a virtual showroom. This asset reuse shifts the bottleneck from creative production to delivery: an AR ad unit must load fast, render at interactive rates on mid-range devices, and stay within the mobile ad size budget.
Streaming and progressive loading approaches such as 3D streaming, adaptive spatial streaming, and asset optimization let a single high-fidelity model be delivered to an AR ad container at the level of detail each device can support, keeping creative quality high without inflating file size.
