Rich media ad

What is a rich media ad?

A rich media ad is an advertising format that uses interactive or dynamic elements beyond a static image, including video, animation, expandable panels, in-ad forms, interactive 3D, and augmented reality. The label distinguishes these creatives from standard banner or image ads, which display a single static asset with a click-through link and no interactive surface.

Rich media ads are built with web technologies (HTML5, JavaScript, and increasingly WebGL or WebXR) and run inside container specifications defined by the ad industry, most commonly MRAID on mobile in-app inventory and IAB HTML5 display specifications on the web. Video-heavy rich media typically layers in the VAST and VPAID standards for playback and interactivity.

How rich media ads work

A rich media ad is packaged as a self-contained interactive creative that runs inside the host page, app, or camera surface. The stages below describe a typical rich media ad lifecycle.

Impression and container load. The ad server delivers the creative into a standard rich media container (an HTML5 iframe on the web, an MRAID-enabled WebView in a mobile app, or a native SDK slot) alongside any macros the creative needs to identify itself.

Environment handshake. The creative queries the host through the container API to learn placement type, viewport size, sound state, and viewability, then decides how to present.

Asset load and interaction. Images, video, 3D models, or scripts stream in and the creative begins its interactive experience, whether that is playing a video, expanding on tap, running a mini-game, or rendering a 3D or AR scene.

Measurement events. Custom and standard events (viewability, video quartile completion, expand, engagement time, click-throughs) fire back to the ad server and to any viewability or verification partners.

Cleanup. On close, resize back to default, or user navigation away, the creative releases resources and hands control back to the host surface.

Common rich media ad formats

Rich media covers a broad family of formats, each suited to different creative goals and inventory types.

Expandable and interactive banners. A standard banner that expands into a larger creative on tap or hover, containing video, carousels, or interactive product content.

In-banner and outstream video. Video creative that plays inside a display slot rather than a dedicated video player, with progress and completion measured through VAST.

Interstitials. Full-screen creatives that appear between content transitions in an app or on the web, often combining video, interactive elements, and calls to action.

Playable ads. Short interactive game or product demo experiences that let the viewer try before installing or buying.

Interactive 3D and AR. 3D product configurators, virtual try-on, and world-scale AR ads that let viewers manipulate a scene or place a product in their environment.

Native rich media. Custom-styled units that match host publisher layouts but include interactive elements such as swipeable galleries or embedded product carts.

Where rich media ads run

Rich media ads are supported across the major inventory types, but the exact container and toolchain differ.

Mobile in-app. MRAID is the dominant container standard, with the mobile ad SDK injecting an API into the WebView that the creative uses for expand, viewability, and lifecycle.

Web display. IAB HTML5 display specifications and vendor-specific rich media SDKs (such as those from Celtra, Google Studio, and Flashtalking) define the container behavior across desktop and mobile web.

Connected TV and OTT. Interactive video ads use extensions of VAST and VPAID or platform-specific interactive templates supplied by the streaming service.

Social and camera platforms. Platform-specific rich media formats (Meta Playable Ads, TikTok Interactive Add-Ons, Snap AR ads) run inside the host platform's own container rather than a shared standard.

Digital out-of-home. Large-format interactive creatives run in DOOH environments, often built as HTML5 or native experiences and triggered by dwell, camera, or sensor input.

Measurement and standards

Rich media ads carry richer measurement than static banners, with signals for viewability, engagement, and interaction alongside standard impression and click metrics.

Viewability. The IAB Open Measurement SDK and MRAID 3.0 report whether the ad is on screen and how much of it is visible.

Engagement. Custom event tracking measures interactions, expansions, dwell time, and completion depth beyond click-through.

Video performance. VAST quartile events, VPAID interaction events, and platform-specific completion metrics measure video-heavy rich media.

Verification. Third-party verification vendors instrument the container to confirm delivery, brand safety, and viewability with an independent signal path.

Rich media ads and interactive 3D

Interactive 3D and AR sit on top of the same rich media foundations as interactive HTML5 creatives: the container defines lifecycle and measurement, and the creative delivers the interactive experience inside it. What changes with 3D and AR is asset weight, device capability variance, and rendering budget, all of which push rich media toward streaming and adaptive delivery rather than one-shot downloads.

This is where 3D streaming, adaptive spatial streaming, and asset optimization matter for rich media: they let interactive 3D and AR ads meet the same load-time and viewability expectations as HTML5 rich media, without giving up model fidelity or requiring device-specific creative variants.
