What is previs?
Previs (previsualization) is the practice of building rough 3D versions of scenes before principal photography so the director, cinematographer, VFX supervisor, and production designer can lock camera choreography, shot coverage, and creative intent while decisions are still cheap to change. It sits at the earliest stage of the 3D production visualization pipeline, upstream of techvis, pitchvis, postvis, and virtual production. The output is typically a low-fidelity animatic in 3D space rather than a finished frame.
Previs emerged inside Lucasfilm and ILM during the 1970s and 1980s as digital tools began to replace hand-drawn storyboards for effects-heavy sequences. It became a routine discipline through the 2000s with the growth of dedicated studios (The Third Floor, Halon, Proof, Day For Nite, and others) whose work now precedes most major visual-effects productions. Every effects-driven film released today likely has a previs department credit somewhere in the tail crawl.
The value of previs is time-and-money math. A change made during previs costs a few hours of artist time. The same change made on stage costs a full crew day; made in post, it costs re-shoots or expensive digital fixes. Moving decisions upstream into a 3D scene that a small team can iterate on protects the schedule and the budget.
How previs works
A previs sequence typically progresses through these stages.
Assembly. Rough proxy geometry stands in for characters, vehicles, sets, and key props. Fidelity is intentionally low so that iteration stays fast. Common rigs, motion libraries, and set kits are reused across shots.
Blocking. Cameras are placed with the correct lenses and sensor sizes. Shots are cut together in a scene view so the director and cinematographer can walk through the sequence as it will appear in the finished film.
Iteration. Sessions with the director and department heads yield notes: reframe this shot, extend the crane move, change the lens. Notes are applied in the same day and reviewed the next.
Lockdown. The final previs edit becomes a reference package: shot list, timing, lens data, and often the 3D scene files themselves, exported to USD or FBX for downstream consumption.
Where previs sits in the visualization family
The umbrella covers several related practices that share the same real-time 3D approach but differ in purpose.
Previs. Rough 3D storyboarding before shooting. Fidelity favors motion and intent over polished visuals.
Techvis (technical visualization). Detailed 3D planning of physical constraints: crane reach, dolly track paths, lens choices, set-build clearances. The output is a technical package the on-set team can use.
Pitchvis. Higher-fidelity previs built to sell a project to studios or financiers. Optimized for look and story rather than shot-list precision.
Postvis. Previs applied to cut plate footage during editorial. Fills in rough versions of shots that still need final VFX so the editor and director can judge the cut before finaling.
Virtual scouting. VR walkthroughs of previs scenes so the department heads can make creative decisions inside the space.
Why previs matters now
Previs used to sit beside the production; today it increasingly drives it. LED-wall virtual production stages consume the same 3D scenes that started as previs, often at higher fidelity. Real-time engines (Unreal, Unity) have made the fidelity gap between rough previs and final imagery small enough that the same asset can move through the pipeline with progressive refinement rather than a hard hand-off. On projects that use virtual production heavily, previs is no longer a separate discipline that finishes before shooting; it becomes the shared 3D bible that runs from concept through delivery.
