Virtual production

What is virtual production?

Virtual production is a filmmaking approach that combines real-time 3D rendering, LED-wall stages, motion tracking, and digital asset pipelines to composite computer-generated environments and elements with live-action photography in-camera, during principal photography, rather than in post. The technique moves visual effects work upstream and reduces the reliance on green-screen composites that require months of downstream compositing.

The category rose to public awareness with Disney's The Mandalorian in 2019, which used ILM's StageCraft LED volume to render its planetary environments in real time and photograph them directly behind the actors. That production established a template that has since been adopted across episodic, feature, commercial, and immersive-media work: an LED wall as the backdrop, a real-time engine (usually Unreal) as the renderer, camera-tracked frustums that update the projected content as the physical camera moves, and a virtual art department upstream to build the environments.

Virtual production is not synonymous with an LED wall. The umbrella includes several distinct techniques: in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) on LED walls, motion capture and performance capture on stage, virtual scouting, real-time compositing with green screen, and virtual production for previsualization. Different projects mix these differently. Some use only virtual scouting and previsualization; others build entire seasons on LED volumes.

How virtual production works

An in-camera visual effects shoot on an LED volume ties several systems together in real time.

Virtual environment build. Environment art teams build the digital sets in a real-time engine, targeting the fidelity a modern LED wall can display. Many projects reuse assets that started as previs.

LED volume and stage. The physical stage is surrounded on multiple sides by LED panels. A ceiling panel often provides overhead illumination. The panels are calibrated for color, brightness, and refresh timing to avoid moiré and rolling-shutter artifacts with the production camera.

Camera tracking and inner frustum. A tracking system (typically an optical or IR array) captures the position and orientation of the physical camera. The engine renders a high-fidelity inner frustum matching the camera's field of view, with a lower-fidelity outer frustum for the rest of the wall. As the camera moves, the perspective updates in real time so the environment reads as three-dimensional through the lens.

Interactive lighting. The LED wall also serves as a large soft light source, casting the color and brightness of the digital environment onto the actors and physical props. This delivers realistic interactive lighting that would be difficult to reproduce with traditional stage lights.

On-set iteration. Because the environment renders in real time, the director can call for changes (repaint the sky, move the sun, shift a building) between takes and see the result immediately.

Beyond LED volumes

Virtual production techniques cover more than in-camera visual effects.

Motion and performance capture. Capturing actor performance for digital characters, either on dedicated mocap stages or on the main production stage using body suits and helmet cameras.

Virtual scouting. Directors and department heads visit the digital environment in VR before it is built physically, blocking cameras and adjusting the space as if scouting a real location.

Real-time green screen. Some shots continue to use green screen, but the real-time engine drives a live composite so the director and cinematographer can judge the shot on set rather than in dailies.

Previsualization on real-time engines. The 3D scenes built for previs increasingly become the seed for the virtual production environment, reducing rework as fidelity increases through the pipeline.

Why virtual production matters

The economic case is straightforward: post-production visual effects are expensive and slow, and every decision left for post is a decision that cannot be reviewed with the director on set. Virtual production compresses the timeline, moves creative decisions in-camera, and often reduces the total effects budget on effects-heavy work. The creative case is stronger for scenes where practical lighting from the environment matters (interiors of vehicles, faces lit by fire, reflections in eyes and metal), which used to require complex on-set solutions or extensive post work.
