Visual effects (VFX)

What is VFX?

VFX (visual effects) is the discipline of creating or altering imagery outside the context of live-action shooting, then combining that imagery with the photographed footage to produce the final frame. It includes computer-generated characters and environments, digital set extensions, matte paintings, particle simulations, cloth and hair simulation, compositing, and cleanup. The term is used to distinguish these post-production techniques from practical special effects (SFX) produced on set (pyro, mechanical rigs, prosthetics, atmosphere).

The category has existed since the earliest days of filmmaking (Méliès, in-camera matte techniques, optical printing) and matured into its modern computer-driven form through the 1970s and 1980s at studios such as ILM and Digital Productions. By the mid-1990s, VFX was integral to blockbuster feature production; today, VFX pipelines drive most tentpole films, high-end streaming series, commercials, and immersive-media projects.

A modern VFX pipeline is deeply software-dependent and cross-disciplinary. It touches modeling, texturing, look-development, rigging, animation, effects (FX), lighting, rendering, compositing, and often research or R&D. Studios split into departments organized around these disciplines, with production supervisors and coordinators managing the flow of shots through each stage. The output is measured in shots delivered per week and total shots produced per project.

How a VFX pipeline works

A shot travels through the pipeline in a predictable pattern.

Ingest and preparation. Plate footage from set is ingested, color-corrected, tracked in 3D space (matchmove), and lens-solved. The plate becomes the reference against which the CG work is built.

Asset build. Modeling, texturing, and look-development produce the digital assets (characters, vehicles, environments) that the shot needs. Assets are often reused across shots and even across projects.

Animation and FX. Animators and FX artists produce the performance and physical simulations (cloth, hair, water, smoke, destruction) required by the shot.

Lighting and rendering. Lighters place the CG elements into the plate's lighting environment and render the final CG passes, usually with an offline path-traced renderer such as Arnold, RenderMan, or V-Ray.

Compositing. Compositors combine the plate and the rendered CG passes with color grading, integration effects (grain, lens artifacts, defocus), and cleanup. The output is the final delivered frame.

Review and iteration. The shot cycles through dailies review at each stage. Supervisors call notes, artists apply them, and the process repeats until the shot is approved for delivery.

Where VFX shows up

Visual effects work spans several delivery contexts.

Feature film. The historical home of VFX, spanning fully CG characters, digital environments, effects simulations, and set extensions.

Episodic television and streaming. Now often larger in aggregate shot count than film work, at tighter budgets per shot.

Commercials. Short-turnaround, high-fidelity work; often the leading edge of new techniques.

Immersive and interactive. VFX techniques and pipelines are increasingly applied to real-time engines, virtual production, XR experiences, and interactive marketing content.

Modern productions increasingly blend VFX with virtual production; the same digital asset can appear on the LED wall during shooting and be refined in post for effects-heavy shots.
